ZIM cooperation network UseCO2
With its Straubing branch BioCat in Straubing Fraunhofer IGB is an official partner of the ZIM* cooperation network “UseCO2” that was officially founded in July 2016. Within this network partners from industry and research work together to develop biotechnological and chemical-physical processes to bind atmospheric or industrially produced carbon dioxide (CO2) and to use it as raw material for the production of sustainable products.
BioCat, Fraunhofer IGB’s Straubing branch, brings its expertise in the field of catalyst development and optimization into the network. The focus of its work is CO2 activation by means of biotechnological, classic chemocatalytic or modern electrocatalytic processes. In the course of this, both enzymes and microorganisms as well as homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts are studied and their use for catalytically active electrode materials is explored. The goal is to overcome the high activation energy for the conversion of CO2 and to make the substrate available as raw material for sustainable production methods in an efficient way.
