Technical Biopolymers

Replacing fossil-based chemicals with renewable raw materials to reduce oil and gas consumption is a major challenge but also an opportunity for sustainable industrial and social development. The use of biobased raw materials as raw materials for plastics can contribute both to lower pollutant emissions and to the development of new materials with a broader application profile. In addition, targeted research can improve recycling and increase the economic and ecological value of biogenic plastics.

Laboratory for technical biopolymers

With the "Laboratory for Technical Biopolymers", funded by the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy since January 2019, a competent partner for regional and supra-regional industry and research on the subject of biogenic plastics is being created in Straubing (Bio-, Elektro- und Chemokatalyse BioCat branch of Fraunhofer IGB). It covers the entire value chain from the identification of suitable biobased raw materials through functionalisation, polymerisation and additives to recyclability and biodegradability. The technologies developed in this context should enable meaningful suitability and property tests to be carried out even with small quantities of material.
