Electricity-based fuels and chemicals

The Fraunhofer Hydrogen Lab Leuna is intended to link innovative technologies for the production of "green" hydrogen and its use in sustainable synthesis processes, e.g. for the chemocatalytic conversion of carbon dioxide in platform chemicals and fuels, with an excellent infrastructure of gas pipelines and gas storage facilities. The Hydrogen Lab primarily serves the further development of electrolyzers and synthesis processes on a pilot scale.

The Fraunhofer Hydrogen Lab Leuna is funded by the state of Saxony-Anhalt and is operated together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Microstructures of Materials and Systems IMWS, Halle.

E-CO2Met –

Electricity & CO2 to Methanol

In the E-CO2Met project green methanol is be produced from low-carbon hydrogen and captured carbon dioxide, which is an important approach to reducing climate-damaging greenhouse gas emissions. For conversion of green hydrogen and CO2 to green methanol, Fraunhofer CBP and TotalEnergies are planning a pilot plant in the new Fraunhofer Hydrogen Lab at the Leuna Chemical Park.

Hy2Chem platform

 

With the Hy2Chem platform, we can test the use of regeneratively generated hydrogen for the production of basic chemicals and fuels in sustainable synthesis processes on a large scale for the first time – even under the conditions of a fluctuating hydrogen stream.  

The Hy2Chem platform is funded by the State of Saxony-Anhalt through ERDF funds.

Synthetic e-fuels as key enabler for sector linking

The subject of the project is the production of renewable fuels such as methanol and long‑chain hydrocarbons or alcohols.
