BioAcrylate – Development of fully bio-based acrylates for the production of binders

The aim of the part of the project worked on at Fraunhofer was the optimization of the synthesis of bio-based acrylic acid from activated lactic acid derivatives.

The project partner Auro has investigated the possible use of bio-based acrylic acid in the company's products.

Challenges

The goal of the now finished project was the optimization of the preparation of bio-based acrylic acid and the development of bio-based binders from this compound.

Objectives and project plan

The goal of the Fraunhofer part of the project was the optimization of the conversion of activated lactic acid derivatives to acrylates. For an economically viable process high yields and high selectivities to the target product are essential.

Impact

The availability of acrylic acid from renewable resources would be an important step to a more sustainable industrial production.
