ReZyKat – Hydrogenation Catalysts Based on Bio-Based Deep-Eutectic Solvents and Recyclable Metals - TP2: Catalyst Production and Synthesis Optimization

The “ReZyKat” project is developing and testing novel, bio-based catalysts for the hydrogenation of five-membered ring compounds such as furfural in order to efficiently convert renewable raw materials into basic chemicals. In addition to optimizing the catalysts’ activity and stability, the project focuses in particular on developing a circular economy concept for the recovery and reuse of the metals used.

Recyclable Catalysts for Resource-Efficient Chemistry

Challenge

In the catalytic conversion of raw materials, impurities in the feedstock, as well as aging and coking processes, lead to a loss of activity and the need for regular replacement of the catalysts. Therefore, the challenge lies in developing highly active and stable catalyst systems that also enable the efficient recovery and reuse of valuable metal components.

Objectives and project plan

The goal of the project is to synthesize and investigate novel catalysts for the hydrogenation of five-membered ring compounds, which are to be produced from basic chemicals derived from renewable raw materials sourced in Central Germany—such as byproducts of the sugar industry. Metals, such as nickel, are used as active components in this process.

The catalyst support is produced using a special synthesis route developed at Fraunhofer IGB based on deep eutectic solvents and is expected to exhibit high catalytic activity and improved stability due to a specifically tuned surface polarity. Since the catalyst ages relatively quickly during hydrogenation, a concept for recovering the active components is being developed to enable the metals used to be recycled. Industry partners are supporting the project team in selecting suitable catalyst systems, recovering the metals, and providing suitable starting materials for the synthesis of the catalyst supports.

Impact

The project enables the resource-efficient production of basic chemicals from renewable raw materials while simultaneously reducing the use of primary metal resources through the recovery and reuse of the active catalytic components. This conserves fossil raw materials, reduces waste volumes, and creates a circular catalyst concept that supports the sustainable transformation of the chemical industry and strengthens regional value chains.
