Annual Report 2024/25

With its innovative solutions, the Fraunhofer IGB continues to contribute to advancing the transformation towards a circular economy and thus increasing the resilience of the German and European economy.

Last year, the business area Environment and Climate Protection celebrated the successful completion of the projects funded by the state of Baden-Württemberg and the EU as part of the ERDF funding program “Bioeconomy Bio-Ab-Cycling“ for the development of modular biorefineries with the participation of high-ranking figures from politics and business.

Further positive results can be reported from the Sustainable Chemistry business area: We are involved in several projects as a partner of the model region “Digitalization of Plnat Value Chains“ in Saxony-Anhalt. The initiative fosters structural transformation in the Central German region and aims to establish the area as a pioneer in the digitalized bioeconomy. One focus in Straubing is the implementation of “green chemistry“. Based on renewable raw materials, natural or modified biopolymers are used in a completely new context due to their suitable chemistry and material properties.

As our research results show, a transformation to a sustainable and circular bioeconomy is not only theoretically possible, but is already being implemented.

We would like to thank our customers and partners for their excellent cooperation and the trust they have placed in us to drive innovation and, building on this, the transformation of the economy. We wish you an informative read and look forward to further cooperation and new, exciting projects.

Spotlight on: focus themes

In the Annual Report, we report on our research and projects in three highly topical focus themes. We take a practical look at the benefits, technological readiness and status of the respective developments and show how customers and partners can work with us.

Precision medicine

Targeted therapies based on the molecular causes of diseases:

  • Precision diagnostics as an essential step, e.g. for tumor diagnostics
  • Targeted therapeutic viruses to treat cancer and gene defects
  • In-vitro disease models for more efficient drug development

Circular economy: use of wastewater, solid and gaseous waste

Processes for recovering valuable substances from wastewater, solid waste and waste gas – from laboratory to pilot and demonstration scale:

  • Development, piloting and market launch of sustainable processes for the use and recovery of residual materials
  • Successful biorefineries, plants and projects
  • How to work with us

Biopolymers – material building blocks of the future

Innovations within the entire value creation cycle to increase the use of bio-based plastics:

  • Solutions and technologies along the innovation chain for bio-based polymers
  • Our monomers, polymeric products, and their applications
    • Polymers from bio-based monomers
    • Microbial and further native biopolymers
