Kari-EX – Using phages against caries

In the project, which is funded by the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, a completely new, cost-effective and safe method for the causal treatment of caries is to be developed as a "proof of concept".

The aim is to produce a chewing gum that contains bacteriophages to kill the bacteria that cause caries. As a result, damage to the tooth substance and the spread of caries should be prevented.

In detail, the project therefore deals with the following aspects:
  • Screening and characterisation of suitable bacteriophages
  • Development of the cultivation process
  • Formulation and integration of bacteriophages into chewing gum
  • Analysis of the caries reducing potential in the application
