Hall B2, booth no. 215/314

IFAT is the world's leading trade fair for technologies for the treatment and recycling of wastewater and waste. Fraunhofer IGB presents the processes developed at the institute for water treatment and the recovery of resources or nutrients from wastewater and waste streams.

Water purification with plasma technology

Substances that are difficult to degrade, such as drug residues or chemicals in industrial wastewater, can be removed using advanced oxidation processes (AOP). However, these cleaning processes usually require chemical additives. The use of plasma processes can be an environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternative.

ePhos® process for the production of fertilizer from waste water

In the ePhos® process, ammonium (NH4+) and phosphate (PO43-) in wastewater are precipitated electrochemically with a magnesium sacrificial electrode as struvite, ammonium, and phosphate are thus recovered as high-quality fertilizer from wastewater.

Recovery of resources and nutrients

Nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium or calcium are essential for the growth of all living organisms. Fraunhofer IGB develops technologies for the recovery of nutrients from wastewater and organic residues. In these processes, the nutrients are precipitated or pelletized in such a way that they can be marketed as a complete and specific product by industrial partners and reused in various agricultural sectors.

FERTINNOWA

FERTINNOWA is a thematic network for innovation transfer in the field of sustainable water use in grain production. Its main objective is to create a meta-knowledge database on innovative technologies and applications for the fertilisation of horticultural crops. FERTINNOWA will also establish a knowledge exchange platform to evaluate and disseminate existing and new technologies for finished crops.

Desalination with capacitive deionisation

Conventional desalination processes cause high costs due to considerable energy consumption or the use of chemicals. Moreover, the ratio of desalinated water to brine is often unsatisfactory. For these reasons, Fraunhofer IGB is developing a process based on capacitive deionization. This enables chemical-free desalination with low energy consumption and high yield of desalinated water.

Biological waste water treatment, fixed bed reactor

Fraunhofer IGB is researching efficient processes for the biological treatment of industrial wastewater. At IFAT 2018, the institute presents a fixed-bed reactor that is used in anaerobic technology and can be used to increase the speed of implementation. The fixed-bed reactor developed at Fraunhofer IGB operates with circulable particles that are used to circulate the fixed-bed at certain times. This enables continuous, trouble-free operation.
